Book lovers of The Women of Quail Creek (TWOQC) met for their monthly themed book group on Wednesday, April 29, in the home of Alphie Smith. This month’s topic for discussion was “These Are a Few of My Favorite Books.”

It proved to be a popular topic and eleven women gathered to share their favorite books. Four of these women were first time attendees. Each woman talked about her three to five favorite books of all time.

There were many responses like, “Oh! I loved that book, too.”

The books covered all genres from fiction to mysteries to epistolary memoirs to graphic novels. There were classics like Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women, Truman Capote’s In Cold Blood, and Daphne du Maurier’s Rebecca.

Some of the first books read became favorites, like the Dick and Jane primers. Many of the books were more contemporary, like Kristin Hannah’s The Women, Barbara Kingsolver’s Demon Copperhead, or Amor Towles’s A Gentleman in Moscow.

The afternoon was fun, social, and enlightening as the women shared some of their reading habits and why certain books had an impact on them.

Those attending were Marjorie Williams, Barb Hunsinger, Tish Maye, Nancy Mart, Alphie Smith, Cindy Currie, Judi White, Ellen Entwistle, Lynn Kern, Chris Lansing, and Diana King.

Marjorie Williams, the facilitator of the themed book group for TWOQC, compiled a list of the 39 titles discussed and sent it to each attendee. She would appreciate any suggestions for future themes or a willingness to host.

TWOQC’s themed book group meets most months. Unlike traditional book clubs, no one must “read” a selected book to participate. The hostess selects the theme, and the women meet to share the books they have already read related to the theme. And these women book lovers always depart with new books to discover, read, and enjoy.
