Shari Rodgers won first place in the Photography Club’s April contest with North to Alaska. Shari said the topic was difficult for her, and she came up with a title before she came up with the photo. “My hubby is a hiker, and that got me on the road to creating this photo. In all his gear I found the compass, and it was interesting looking, and the idea came to me to have a hand holding and using it…It came alive when I changed from color to black and white.” Nikon D500, 35 mm. f/4/5, 1/60 sec, ISO 640, Exp -1.
Jim Burkstrand won second place with Chef with Carving Knife. Jim said that he had no classical tools in his collection of recent photos, but he did have several photos from the Chef’s Gala held in Quail Creek last January. He said this shot was taken at the Quail Creek booth where Chef Aris was carving a rack of lamb. “Because I didn’t want to disturb their work with a flash, I used my Pixel 9 Pro, zoom lens, shooting in raw mode. I then post processed in Lightroom, just cropping, global sharpening, and boosting the shadows. I was quite happy with how it turned out. By the way, it tasted as good as it looked.” 6.9 mm, f/1.7, 1/60 sec, ISO 39
Monte Hudson won third place with Tool Rack, taken at a farm museum in Baton Rouge, “with my cell phone and processed with the phone’s global adjustments such as cropping, sharpening, and lighting.” iPhone 14 Pro, 2.22 mm, f/2.2, 1/60 sec, ISO 800.
The monthly contest winners are selected by a panel of independent judges. Membership in the photography club is open to all Quail Creek residents. Information about the club is available at www.pcqc.org.
