Splashing Into Summer: Pool Safety And Fun!

Melani Caron

Whether you are hunkering down in Arizona for the summer or heading off to cooler temps, a swimming pool (or maybe a nearby lake?) is the best place to spend your summer. It keeps you cool when the weather gets hot. Water also helps your body stay strong and healthy. Moving in water is gentle on your bones and joints. Staying safe in the sun and water is important. A few simple steps will keep your pool days fun and relaxing.

Stay Safe In the Sun

No matter where you are this summerthe summer sun is very strong. You must protect your skin and body from the heat.

* Wear sunscreen daily. Use a high SPF number. Apply 30 minutes before you go outside.

* Reapply after swimming. Even waterproof sunscreen washes off after awhile.

* Drink plenty of water. Do not wait until you feel thirsty. Keep a plastic water bottle by your chair.

* Wear a big hat. A wide brim shades your face, eyes, and neck.

* Choose good sunglasses. Look for pairs that block harmful UV rays.

Move Safely In And Out

Walking around a pool requires extra care. Wet surfaces can be very slippery.

* First, make sure to shower before you enter the pool

* Never swim completely alone. Always have a buddy nearby in case you need help.

* Wear water shoes. They give you a good grip on slimy or wet tiles.

* Use the handrails. Hold on tight when you walk down the pool steps.

* Take your time. Never run or rush on the pool deck.

* Watch for puddles. Look down when you walk to avoid slick spots.

Easy Pool Exercises

You do not have to swim fast laps to get a good workout. The water offers great resistance for your muscles.

* Water walking. Walk from one side of the shallow end to the other. Pump your arms as you move.

* Leg lifts. Hold onto the edge of the pool. Lift one leg out to the side, then switch.

* Arm paddles. Push your hands through the water forward and backward.

* Marching in place. Bring your knees up high toward your chest.

* Water volleyball. Please see the front desk for more informationthe net is set up and ready to go!

The Best Times To Swim

Timing your pool visits can help you beat the worst of the heat.

* Go early. The morning air is cool and the pool is quiet.

**Go late. The evening sun is low and will not burn your skin as easily.

* Rest at noon. Avoid the pool between 10 AM and 4 PM when the sun is hottest.

* Find the shade. Sit under a large umbrella when you are not in the water.

Have a fun and safe summer!
