September Photo Contest—Wood

The Photography Club recently announced winners of the monthly photo contest, which focused on the theme of Wood.

Jeff Krueger won first place with Ranch Cabin, an image he captured on a working ranch near Westcliffe, Colo. He said that during the two days of photographing cowboys and cowgirls around the ranch, he came across an old, hand-built line cabin. “I loved the aging of the wood and the weathered texture of both the cabin and the old wagon wheel. Instead of shooting the entire cabin, I decided to frame around the corner and wheel against the side” to show the age of the structure. Canon EOS R5 MkII, 26 mm, f/7, 1/160 sec, ISO 400.

Steve Piepmeier won second place with Bee Resort. Steve said, “Looking for inspiration for the September challenge of Wood, I went to Desert Meadows Park as the light was fading and came upon a Solitary Bee Resort. The resort was full, and a buzz was coming from the rooms as their work was done for the day! Bees are so important for nature and us.” Apple iPhone 16 Pro 6.8 mm, f/1.8, 1/160 sec, ISO 200.

Eleanor Houts won third place with Burly Bowl, which she found at the local farmer’s market. Eleanor said the bowl was made by Ken Witten from wood that was grown in Alaska, but she was unable to discover the type of wood. Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max, 6.8 mm, f/1.8, 1/125 sec, ISO 80.
