Quail Creek Quilt Covey Hosts “Duffle Bag Extravaganza” to Support Foster Children

The Quail Creek Quilt Covey recently brought together creativity, generosity, and community spirit for a meaningful cause at its “Duffle Bag Extravaganza,” held March 10 and March 12.

The event, organized by project team members Carol Marholz, Janice Jahne, and Maggie Quinn, set an ambitious and heartfelt goal: to create 45 handmade duffle bags for Southern Arizona child protective services. These bags will be given to foster children—many of whom enter care with few or no personal belongingsto provide them with a sense of dignity and a safe place to carry their possessions.

To make the project accessible and efficient, the team carefully prepared complete duffle bag kits in advance. Each kit included quilted and pre-cut fabric, zippers, web strapping, and pre-made binding, allowing volunteers to focus on construction during the event.

A total of 40 volunteers participated across two classes, with 20 attendees in each session. Participants of all skill levels came together, working side by side in a collaborative and supportive environment. The room buzzed with energy as volunteers sewed, learned new techniques, and shared in the satisfaction of contributing to a meaningful project.

The success of the duffle bag extravaganza highlights not only the quilting talents within the Quail Creek community but also its deep commitment to service. Through thoughtful planning and enthusiastic participation, the Quilt Covey transformed fabric and supplies into something far more impactfulcomfort and care for children in need.

Organizers expressed gratitude to all who participated, noting that the true success of the event lies in the difference these bags will make in the lives of foster children across Southern Arizona.
