QC Quilt Covey and Sahuarita Kindergarten Class Create a Quilt

Sue Ann Obremski

For the third year in a row, the Quail Creek Quilt Covey (QCQC) has partnered with a kindergarten class at Sahuarita primary school to create a special charity quilt. Teacher Barb Tingle wanted to pair her “Q is for Quilt” lesson with a handson project that would help her students understand the needs of others in their community.

The class talked about what it means to feel warm, safe, and comforted. Their discussion turned to children who may not have warm blankets or who might be spending time in the hospital, away from home and the familiar things that help them feel secure. Inspired by this conversation, the students decided they wanted to make and donate a quilt to the Ronald McDonald House in Tucson.

Quail Creek Quilt Covey member, Linda Lentz, who volunteers in Mrs. Tingle’s classroom, guided the children as they created their own personalized quilt squares. She then stitched the squares together into a beautiful, finished quilt, which the class proudly donated. The children also wrote heartfelt “get well” and “feel better soon” letters to accompany their gift, hoping to bring comfort to the child who receives it.

Quail Creek Quilt Covey (QCQC) is a group of quilters with varying levels of experience who gather weekly, or more often, to share our love of quilting and all things fabric! Our Monday quilters group focuses on working together to make quilts for charity. Each year, as a group or as individuals, QCQC members make and give over 100 quilts to the community charities we support. All residents are welcomed.
