In keeping with what has become an annual holiday tradition, the Quail Creek Tennis Club (QCTC) ladies spread Christmas cheer on Dec. 9 by combining fellowship and a worthy cause. This year, the Social Committee (Hilary Wade, Sandy Hirdes, and Joy Olson, led by Dinah Shumway) chose the Caring Hearts & Hands of Quail Creek’s Youth On Their Own (YOTO) as the designated recipient.
Guest speaker Carol Leiby described YOTO’s impressive achievements in supporting high school graduation of homeless and unaccompanied youth in Pima County since 1996. Particular emphasis was placed on the Mini Mall program that provides non-perishable food items and personal health products for homeless youth.
YOTO volunteers work with high school counselors to identify students eligible for the Mini Mall program. Students in this program can order items online at no cost to them. YOTO receives no federal funding. Donations made to YOTO are eligible for a tax credit, not just a tax deduction. In keeping with the holiday spirit, QCTC’s “Winter Wonderland” attendees were encouraged to bring suitable donations and found festive, holiday-wrapped boxes awaiting their contributions at the luncheon.
After a delicious taco salad bar and dessert, it was time for a little fun and games! Social Committee member Joy Olson designed the creative table decorations, and one lucky lady at each table found the hidden ticket, gifting her with her table’s centerpiece. Next, the ladies’ knowledge of Christmas songs was tested by a 19-question quiz, with top-scorer Jane Bottlinger winning one of three Christmas gnomes.
A festive meal shared with friends, plus a worthy purpose to support: Now that’s a winning combination any time of year!
