“So many of our dreams at first seem impossible, then they seem improbable, and then, when we summon the will, they soon become inevitable.” That is a quote from the Superman actor, Christopher Reeve. It perfectly describes Quail Creek resident Larry Rowen, once you get to know him. He is a proud 26-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force where he was introduced to Kempo Karate. Unfortunately, he was never able to pursue this hobby he loved, since he moved around a lot in the military. Then he underwent a kidney transplant! Fortunately, his son donated Larry a kidney. Later in life, he received a pacemaker to keep that big heart of his beating. That alone would sideline many of us. But it didn’t stop Larry from coming to the Anza gym a few years ago and looking into the new Karate class being offered.
As Larry tells it, “I finally found the place to fulfill my dream! The folks were amazing, and my desire to do karate was possible!” He progressed quickly, sometimes skipping a rank due to his determination and fortitude. He moved from white to orange, then to high purple belt rank. His dream was coming to fruition. Then one day at karate, Larry didn’t seem quite right. The karate team pushed him to go to the hospital. He was diagnosed with a brain hemorrhage and had surgery. Larry insists, “The folks at karate saved my life.”
The road was a long one to recovery, as over the months, he also developed diabetes and valley fever and needed a hernia repair. All along the way, when he could not work out, Larry came and sat to cheer on others and help where he could. Sometimes he could only do one day a week for 30 minutes of a workout before his get-up-and-go ran out. But over time, he became stronger and able to do more!
Fast forward to today! Larry is at karate three or four days a week. He might not be as strong or move as well, and his memory may not be as sharp as it once was, but his determination in achieving his dream is alive and well. He is working on testing for brown belt sometime in the near future. Isn’t this the inspiration we all need? Whatever your dream, do not cast it aside—go for it!
Believing in one’s own abilities and maintaining an optimistic outlook can fuel the fire within and help navigate the most difficult of journeys. When one encounters obstacles or moments of doubt, never compromise dreams. No matter age or abilities, there is a pathway—one just has to find it! Isn’t a hero an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles?
We all have dreams. If yours is karate, let us help you. Come and meet Larry and the team. Classes are Mondays and Tuesdays from 4 to 6 p.m. and Fridays from 2 to 4 p.m.
