Did you know that there is a facility in Green Valley where female victims of domestic abuse can go to get away from an abusive environment? Known as Genesis House, the home provides a safe haven for women and their children under age 10 who often arrive at the door with only the clothing they are wearing. Adult residents range in age from their 20s up to 86.
Genesis House is supported by a nonprofit foundation, Hands of a Friend, which raises funds to keep the facility operating. Genesis House gets no federal or state funds but, rather, relies on donations and the work of many volunteers. One source of income for Genesis House is DaZee’s Resale Shop, 231 West Duval Road, Suite D, Green Valley. The shop accepts gently used clothing that is, in turn, sold for reasonable prices.
In November, The Women of Quail Creek’s Community Outreach Committee will be collecting items needed by Genesis House for everyday operations. These include paper towels, toilet paper, dish liquid and dish washer detergent, 13-gallon trash bags, laundry and cleaning supplies, as well as grooming and feminine hygiene products. Canned and other non-perishable foods are also needed as are new twin-size sheets and pillowcases. Donations may be placed in the boxes in the Madera clubhouse lobby between Nov. 4 and 18. If you don’t have time to shop but still want to help, checks payable to TWOQC can be placed in the box at 549 N. Eagle Rock Drive. Committee members will then do the shopping for you.
TWOQC and the Genesis House residents and staff appreciate your support. You can also help the nonprofit by donating clothing for both men and women and shopping at DaZee’s. While most clothing can be gently used, socks and underwear must be new and in a package.
