On March 3 eight The Women Of Quail Creek (TWOQC) members traveled to the Reid Park Zoo to take a “behind-the-scenes” tour of the zoo. The tour included the kitchen where all the animals’ food is prepared individually for each species. They made giant “popsicles” for certain critters. The giraffe popsicle was in a two-gallon bucket with all kinds of veggies chopped up and frozen in water on a long pole. Our tour guide told us that the medical needs of all the animals are handled by their state-of-the-art veterinary hospital/clinic and pharmacy staff. In case of an emergency, there is always a veterinarian on duty.
As an added bonus from our guides, the group was able to do a feeding session with the giraffes. A five-gallon bucket full of ice and carrots was quickly devoured, as each of us had the opportunity to feed them up close and personal.
After a great lunch at the zoo café, we all went on our own to see some of the other animals. It was a great day of learning and making new friends.
