The Nurses of Quail Creek

Jeanine Cavagnaro of the Aquabelles

Janine Baxter

September proved to be a busy month for the Nurses of Quail Creek.

On the afternoon of Sept. 17, several of us gathered at the home of Carol Michels for games of Mah Jongg and Mexican Train, as well as snacks. It was mostly fun, with only a tiny bit of our competitive spirits shining through.

Later that week, on Sept. 20, we ventured out to the Green Valley Recreation East Center for the annual Aquabelles show. The theme was “All You Need Is Love,” and the talented women performed to a variety of love songs we all recognized. Lots of sunshine and entertainment, as well as raffle prizes, were offered that afternoon. Two of our own nurses were directly involved, which made the event even more special to watch. Jan Agner was the Mistress of Ceremonies, and Jeanine Cavagnaro was both a performer and director. The Aquabelles have been in Green Valley since 1965! Next year we plan to enjoy their 60th Anniversary performance.

The remainder of September has been spent reading the book The Women, by Kristin Hannah (a historical fiction about a Vietnam nurse). We will gather on Oct. 15 at 5:30 p.m. at Janine Baxter’s home (1486 E. Dahlia Drive) to discuss our thoughts and emotions. We are looking forward to visiting with our neighbor and member of the Quail Creek community, Lynn Rafter, a retired U.S. Air Force RN who served in Vietnam. She will join us to discuss the book and share some of her experiences and memories.
