Tom Herder
Our featured players are Fred Visser and Jerry Fox.
Fred and his wife Linda have been Quail Creek residents for over six years, and both have played table tennis during that entire period.
Visser says, “Our focus has been to downplay the competitiveness and try to have fun. The winner is the one with the most laughs.” They have two daughters and four grandsons of whom they are very proud.
Incidentally, Fred was an outstanding athlete in his college years and thereafter. His main sports were basketball and baseball, but his athletic prowess carries over well to table tennis!
Jerry Fox and his wife Juline came to Quail Creek as snowbirds in 2004, following their children. They became permanent residents in 2021. Jerry says, “I started playing table tennis in 2004.”
Continuing in his dry sense of humor, he adds, “There was much training and coaching before anyone would even consider I was really playing. I love playing the game—win or not.” He was a general surgeon in Southern Illinois. If he handled a scalpel as well as he does his paddle, we’d say he must have been a darned good surgeon!
Table Tennis Topics: If you own an inverted sponge-rubber paddle, it helps keep the surface clean and tacky by spraying some glass lens cleaner and wiping it off once in a while. Tacky is good!
We meet for fun on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 to 3 p.m. at Anza and play doubles. On Sundays from 12:30 to 3 p.m., we have more serious singles practice.
