March Photo Club Field Trip

The Photo Club of Quail Creek has a field trip for its members every month, excluding the very hot summer months. In March we visited Historic Hacienda de la Canoa, known locally as simply Canoa Ranch. The sun was bright and trees and flowers were in bloom.

La Canoa, as it was once called, was a working cattle ranch from 1820 to the 1970s. Starting as a land grant, it eventually grew to over 500,000 acres in size. At its peak the ranch included homes for 40 cowboys and their families, corrals, various workshops and stables, several service buildings including a blacksmith shop and a school.

Today, the Canoa Ranch is a historic landmark and, under a master plan supported by Pima County, is being gradually restored. It is a wonderful site for a photographer with everything from landscapes to historic buildings and facilities to household objects and smaller items found on ranches of that time. I have included a selection of photos taken by the club members to give you a sense of the ranch.

The Photography Club of Quail Creek has numerous activities for its members. Consult the club’s constantly updated website http://www.pcqc.org as well as the weekday HOA What’s Happening for additional information.
