February’s safety tip, “Hit Me with Your Best Beep!,” highlights the life-saving importance of working smoke alarms and practicing escape plans. According to the NFPA (National Fire Protection Association), smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in a home fire by more than half; most home fire deaths occur where alarms are missing or not working. Homes should have smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside sleeping areas, and on every level, tested monthly and replaced every 10 years. Equally important is having an escape plan: Identify two exits from each room, choose an outdoor meeting spot, practice regularly, and remember to stay out once you escape. The Santa Rita Fire Department supports community safety through its Smoke Alarm & Battery Replacement Program and encourages residents to test alarms and reach out for help to protect their families.
