Women In Blue Luncheon
On May 23 women in the Democratic Club of Quail Creek (DCQC) participated in the Women In Blue Luncheon. The group allows like-minded women to gather in a neutral setting.
The guest speaker was Mr. Soniran Soyannwo, organizing director for the Engel for Arizona campaign. He spoke to issues that Kirsten Engel is addressing, including Women’s Health Care, Climate Change, and Immigration, to name a few. Soyannwo also spoke at the DCQC gathering held on June 15. Read on for more details.
DCQC Meeting June 15
Election 2024 is upon us, and the Arizona State Primary will be held on July 30. DCQC members packed the Ocotillo Room at the Kino Center on June 15 to learn more about the slate of candidates down ballot.
Kim Lisk, a Quail Creek resident, is running for the first time as a candidate for Sahuarita Town Council. There are four candidates for four open positions. Lisk said that it is a non-partisan position, stressing the importance that we come together as a community, regardless of party affiliation, to address the issues facing us. She thanked the QC residents attending for signing her petition (over 300 signatures) to enable her to run.
Jeanne Buell, DCQC vice president, gave an overview of Legislative District 19 (LD19) where important races are taking place. Redistricting was done in 2022 so that LD19 spans five counties: Cochise, Graham, Santa Cruz, Greenlee, and part of Southern Pima County. It stretches 200 miles north from the Mexican border and 200 miles west from the New Mexico state line. There are 146,000 registered voters out of approximately 182,000 who are of voting age. “Slate” cards will be mailed out in the fall to prospective voters. You can receive more information at ld19arizonademocrats.org.
The highlight of the meeting was Soniran Soyannwo, organizing director for Kirsten Engel’s campaign. He spoke for over 40 minutes, engaging with the audience. Engel is running for Congress in Arizona’s Congressional District 6. She will be on the July 30 Democratic Primary ballot, unopposed. Engel lost to the conservative Republican, Juan Ciscomani, in 2022 by only 5,200 votes.
Soyannwo has been traveling all over the district with Engel and alone, speaking on Engel’s behalf. He is a dynamic and enthusiastic speaker.
Soyannwo highlighted Engel’s commitment to re-establish women’s reproductive health care rights, to protect Arizona’s public lands and water supply, and to build the economy that works for all. As an Environmental Law Professor at the University of Arizona, Engel makes climate change a top priority. Engel is the “common-sense” candidate and reaches out to everyone. The attentive audience offered many constructive ideas and comments.
The next DCQC meeting is July 20 at 3 p.m. in the Kino Center. All residents of Quail Creek are welcome.
