The Photo Club of Quail Creek continues with its monthly members contest. April’s theme was “Family.” Each member can submit up to three photos taken in the last three years. “Family” drew a wide variety of subjects, and all of the photos submitted can be viewed on our Flicker site tinyurl.com/2p8zy5cr.

For April 2023, Steve Piepmeier won the first place award with his photo titled Spread the Whoo. Steve comments, “The wonders of observing great horn owls nesting with their owlets as they develop and eventually fledge is so exciting here in Quail Creek. Patience brings the magic of the moment when later I see what has been photographed.”

The second-place photo was submitted by Jeff Krueger titled Bonding to the Band. Jeff’s comments about the photo are, “When I photograph airshows, I always like to look for images other than airplanes on the ground or in the air. Much of the story is about the people who put on the shows, as well as the general public who attend them. There are lots of great ‘people shots’ that really add to telling an airshow experience and how the attendees spend their time enjoying all that goes on. This photo was taken at the 2022 California Capital show in Rancho Cordova, Calif. I saw this family enjoying the music of a rock band made up of USAF enlisted personnel. It was a great example of a family enjoying the many ground activities and being together for a Saturday family outing. This image was taken with a Canon EOS R5 mirrorless camera with a 24-105mm lens at 56mm, f/7 at 1/160th of a second exposure. I was shooting at ISO 100 that day as it was bright outside.”

Third-place winner for April was Jim Burkstrand titled Family Hike. Jim’s comments about the shot are, “My 13-year-old granddaughter and her father (my son) had come to visit us. One of my favorite places to take family visitors is to Madera Canyon. As we walked the nature trail out of Proctor, it wasn’t long before the 13-year-old took the lead. If you know that generation, it wasn’t unexpected. Grandma, second in line, tried to keep up. Dad just trailed along, relaxed, and enjoyed the day. I like the leading line the paved trail provided. I used my Canon 90D, my 16-300mm Tamron lens at 22 mm, and shot in raw at f/5.6 and 1/1600 sec. I post-processed the shot in Adobe Lightroom.”

Congratulations to April’s contest winners!
