Are you ready for a toe-tapping, foot-stomping, boot-kicking evening of fun? Garland Smith, a professional square dance caller, will provide the entertainment at the Javelina Hoedown, sponsored by The Women of Quail Creek (TWOQC), on Sunday, Oct 13, from 5:00 to 8:00 pm in the Madera Clubhouse Ballroom.
“I have more than 35 years of experience, and I’ll have your group dancing in less than a minute, guaranteed…no previous experience required! I provide the music, the knowledge, and the experience to get the audience on their feet learning square dancing, line dancing, the ‘Chicken Dance,’ and ‘The Hokey Pokey’ that are fun to dance to and are easy to learn,” said Garland.
Garland has recorded two square dance records, “Witch Doctor” and “Love Potion Number 9,” on Blue Star Square Dance label. He attended square dance calling schools that provided the basic foundation in timing and choreography. “Over the years, I’ve observed how other callers have figured out what works for them and through the ‘School of Hard Knocks.’ I especially enjoy doing ‘fun night’ square dance parties that offer good, clean, wholesome fun, and I’ve made this a specialty offering,” he added.
The Hoedown is a western-themed event and will include dinner featuring pulled pork, chicken (served with a choice of sauces), chili, green salad, coleslaw, cornbread, and for dessert, apple cobbler with whipped cream. Beverages available for purchase include beer, wine, mixed drinks, soft drinks, and western-themed specialty drinks. The Hoedown is open to all Quail Creek residents and the outside community. Western attire is encouraged but not mandatory.
There will also be a gift basket raffle, a silent auction (where you must be present to win), and a 50-50 cash raffle where you do not need to be present to win.
With only 300 tickets available, tickets are going fast, and last year’s event sold out early! Individual seats are $35 per person, and you may also purchase tables of six (cash or checks payable to “TWOQC Charity Account” only).
To reserve your tickets, contact Peggy McGee at 520-207-6188 or [email protected]. Reserved tickets must be paid for by cash or check and dropped off or mailed to Peggy at 1908 E. Longspur Pl., Green Valley, AZ 85614-6039 before paper tickets can be issued.
Each October, TWOQC sponsors an annual scholarship fundraiser that awards scholarships each spring to high school seniors and women 21 and over who want to return to school to complete their education, update rusty skills, or enter a new career field.
