Fire Prevention Week 2026 (Oct. 4 to 10) focuses on the NFPA theme “Charge into Fire Safety™: Safe Charging Is a Superpower.” The campaign highlights the importance of safely charging devices powered by lithium-ion batteries, including phones, tablets, laptops, power tools, e-bikes, and scooters.
Lithium-ion batteries are widely used because they store a large amount of energy in a small space. However, damaged, defective, or improperly charged batteries can overheat, catch fire, or explode. Practicing safe charging habits can help prevent these risks.
Key Fire Safety Tips
* Purchase devices and batteries that meet recognized safety standards (UL, ETL, or CSA certified).
* Always use the manufacturer-approved charger or charging cable.
* Charge devices on hard, flat surfaces, not on beds, couches, or other soft materials.
* Unplug devices once they are fully charged.
* Stop using a device if the battery becomes excessively hot, swells, leaks, produces unusual odors, smokes, or makes popping/hissing sounds.
* When possible, charge larger devices such as e-bikes, scooters, and power tools outdoors and away from exits.
Home Fire Safety Reminders
In addition to battery safety, ensure your home has working smoke alarms and a practiced fire escape plan. Test smoke alarms regularly and make sure everyone in the household knows how to exit safely during a fire.
