Tom Cadwalader won first place with Yellow 3 in the photography club’s May contest. Tom said, “Because the theme for our May contest was yellow, I went to Desert Meadows in search of yellow flowers. I found a few prickly pear blooming in yellow but quickly found sunflowers in full bloom. I found one facing the morning sun that allowed a composition of looking at the underside of the flower with the petals backlit. I like to include the green underside of sunflowers because the green has lots of fine detail.” Leica SL3, 100 mm, f/8, 1/160 sec, ISO 100.
Steve Piepmeier won second place with Sun Into Yellow. Steve said, A volunteer Sunflower bloomed toward the end of January 2026 with our mild Winter! A bit of rain on the petals challenged me to try a three-element composition with a diamond ring.”
Shot early in the morning with an iPhone 16 Pro, 6.8 mm, f/1.78, 1/5000 sec, ISO 80.
Jon Williams won third place with Grape Jelly Breakfast. Jon said, “One of the enjoyable activities living in Green Valley is the opportunity to photograph the various birds in the area. This image of a female Hooded Oriole was taken at my backyard grape jelly feeder.” Nikon Z8, 600 mm, f/7.1, 1/1600 sec, ISO 1000, EXP 0.3.
The photography club holds a contest each month with a specified theme, and a team of independent judges selects the winners.
