March Photography Contest Winners

Bruce Hartsell

Monte Hudson won first place in the photography club’s March contest with Long and Lean,an image of a rental bike meant to enjoy peddling along the beach in Oceanside, Calif. The theme for the month was unusual vehicles. Monte said, “I took the photo from the front at a low angle to accentuate the long frame and give the photo more interest.” iPhone 14 Pro, 24 mm, f/1.78, 1/1272 sec, ISO 80.

Eleanor Houts won second place with Reindeer Sleigh, a photo taken at the University of Alaska Museum in Fairbanks, Alaska. Eleanor said that reindeer sleds are traditional Arctic transportation methods, primarily used by indigenous Northern Arctic cultures for thousands of years. She shared additional information from the museum: “This is a modern adaptation of the Albany cutter sleighs, which were known for having a strong front curve, and were very fashionable between the 1870s and the 1920s. Sleighs like this traditionally would have been pulled by horses, due to their weight, and were very popular in the United States and Russia! This one has lower runners than is traditional.” Cell phone and technical data not available.

Jan Hartsell won third place with Old Pickup”—an old Chevy pickup sitting in front of a restaurant in Cave Creek. She converted the image from color because, “I liked the contrast of a black and white shot over the dull red of the original.” Pixel 2 XL, 2.5 mm, f/1.8, 1/2000 sec, ISO 72.

The reporter negligently omitted last names of the winners last month, among other errors. They were Jeff Krueger, Jim Burkstrand, and Monte Hudson. The reporter sincerely regrets his errors and omissions after being severely chagrined.
