Why I Care So Much About Being a Caregiver

My grandfather raised me on his own from the time that I was two years old. He worked extremely hard and wouldn’t get home some nights until 7 or 8 p.m. Since I can remember (I might have been about 10 years old), I was his caregiver. I would cook him dinner every night. As he enjoyed watching the news and the Dodgers, he would fall asleep. I would wake him and send him off to bed. This was our nightly routine. He had his brother over quite a bit, and they enjoyed discussing politics, the stock market, and sports.

Being around seniors or, rather, people who were older than I was natural. I felt comfortable, as that was all that I knew. I truly believe that is a big part of why I’m so passionate about caregiving. I truly love helping others and being able to make a difference in their lives.

My grandfather owned a nursing home, and as a child, I spent a lot of time there. I would help feed the patients and just spend time visiting with them. Some of these people did not have family and never had visitors. I’ll never forget how their faces lit up when I would come to visit. It meant the world to them, and that profoundly changed my life. I knew then that I wanted to continue to help people in any way I could. My grandfather was “old-school” and taught me to treat everyone with compassion, dignity, and respect. I learned the importance of listening and how just by doing that, it can make all the difference.

I am a Quail Creek resident, and I would love to meet with you to see how I can possibly be of help to you and your loved ones. I can be reached by phone at 626-344-1964 or by email at wasmuthtracy@gmail.com.
