Democratic Club Gives to Nonprofits

Alphie Smith

The month of November is the time each year when the Democratic Club of Quail Creek (DCQC) gives back to local nonprofits in Southern Arizona. This year, representatives from Hands of a Friend and the Florence Project were at the meeting held in the Kino Center on Nov. 15 at 3 p.m. Carol Smith, president of DCQC, presented each organization with a $250 check.

The Florence Immigrant & Refugee Rights Project operates out of Tucson, Phoenix, and Florence. The speakers were Anisa Villarreal and Annalise Parady. They explained how the organization uses a pragmatic approach to provide free legal and social services for detained adults locally.

Nationally, they advocate for the humanity and dignity of immigrants. The Florence Project gives immigrants information on what to expect going through the system and educates them on their rights. This applies to unaccompanied children as well as adults. In 2024 they served more than 15,000 people.

Hands of a Friend is a foundation since 2021 that provides a safe haven for women and their children who have suffered from domestic violence and abuse. Executive Director Alexa Delgado and CEO/Chairman Gina Dalsing spoke on what the foundation provides for these women. In Green Valley they operate Genesis House and use proceeds from their DaZee’s Resale Shop to support their efforts. They rely on grants and donations. They receive no federal funding.

The meeting was educational and inspiring. Both nonprofits are worthwhile programs serving those in need.

The next DCQC meeting will be held on Jan. 17, 2026. It will be the annual meeting with elections and will include speaker David Gramath on affordable and micro-housing.

There will be an additional meeting on Jan. 10, 2026. It will be a forum of the Arizona Corporation Commission candidates.
