February Photo Contest Winners

Lon Richardson won first place in the Photography Club’s February photo contest with Stuck in the Queue. He said he had to dodge jumping cholla “to get an angle on this saguaro ‘herd’ all lined up for a turn to study the well-drilling tower in the distance,” here in Quail Creek. He commented, “Clouds, scrub growth, dried petals, shadows, and needles, of course, add to form and texture.” Lon captured the image with his Samsung 25 Ultra, 2.2 mm, f/2.2, 1/2500 sec, ISO 50.

Mark Cohen won second place with Offstreet Mall, captured in Amsterdam with his iPhone 13 Pro. Mark said, “Just about all of the elements of perspective were represented. The alley seemed to disappear. Consequently, and without hesitating, out came the camera.” 1.6 mm, f/1.8, 1/100 sec, ISO 125.

Shari Rodgers won third place with Durango Choo Choo, her photo of the Durango/Silverton Train. Shari reported, “This unforgettable trip takes you up into the Rocky Mountains with views of the San Juan National Forest as you travel alongside the beautiful Animas River on your way to the historic mining town of Silverton. While you enjoy a short stay in Silverton, you then ride the train back to Durango. The area is beautiful, and while hanging out the window of our train car, I was able to capture this shot!” Nikon D 500, 20 mm, f/7.1, 1/640 sec, ISO 100, Exp -1.

The Photography Club of Quail Creek holds a monthly photo contest in which members may submit up to three photos taken within the last 13 months and with minimal post-processing. A panel of judges from across the country selects the winners. The club also has a quarterly challenge in which members may submit up to three photos taken within the quarter. Extensive post-processing is allowed, and winners are selected by club member voting.

The club meets on the second Wednesday of the month at 6:30 p.m., usually at the Kino Conference Center Mesquite Room. The club also schedules episodic photo field trips and educational meetings. Consult the club’s website at www.pcqc.org as well as the weekday HOA What’s Happening for additional information. Membership is open to all Quail Creek residents.
