Parkinson’s and Pickleball: Yes, Those Two Things Do Go Together

Janine Baxter

The March event for the Nurses of Quail Creek was an information session about pickleball players here in Quail Creek who have been awarded grant money. Not so unusual until you learn that these players also have Parkinson’s, and the grant came from the Parkinson’s Foundation. A presentation was given by Lenny Friedman, a USA Pickleball Education Ambassador and Quail Creek resident, and Kathryn Riley, a pickleball coach from the Phoenix area who has been instrumental in bringing awareness to the benefits of pickleball to those with Parkinson’s. In addition, two participants from the Parkinson’s pickleball group here in Quail Creek were present to share some of their specific experiences and the physical and even more prominent mental/emotional/social benefits this program has afforded them. About 15 nurses gathered at the home of Peggy Myers and were able to learn, ask questions, and enjoy each other’s company.

Next up is a trip to Madera Canyon on April 15. Nurses will meet at 8:20 a.m. at the home of Carol Michels, 2457 E. Sky Creek Drive, to carpool. A gentle/beginner one-hour stretch class will be led by instructor Jennifer Rischard and take place in The Yurt at Santa Rita Lodge. The cost is $10 each, and an RSVP is required. Afterward, we will share coffee/tea and a bite to eat at La Posada Java (pay for your own drink/meal). Contact Carol Michel at 310-709-7345 to RSVP or for more details.

Lastly, as always, we want to make sure to invite all nurses in the Quail Creek community to join us in 2025. We are always welcoming new members. There are no membership fees. We typically meet once per month, and nurses can participate in any and all activities that are of interest to them. If you have any questions, contact 2025 Chairperson Janine Baxter at [email protected] or 509-919-1399.
