Scammers and Chickpeas and AI, Oh My!

Rob Baxter

Regarding Scammers and Chickpeas and AI, you may rather go up against Lions and Tigers and Bears, so stay informed! At our February meeting, we had the privilege of hosting the Green Valley Sheriff’s Auxiliary’s Scam Squad. They shared insights into the latest scams, many of which specifically target seniors. Alarmingly, scammers are now leveraging AI to enhance their schemes. You can read more at scamsquadsav.org/faq.

At our general meeting in March, our very own Judi Jarosh presented “Demystifying Artificial Intelligence—Understanding the Basics.” We explored how today’s AI behaves more like a teenager than a mature adult! One example is, we all know if A = B and B = C, then A must equal C, but not using AI. We also learned that AI can suggest canning recipes that can be deadly: chickpeas. Meanwhile, our Open Labs have been busier than ever, setting new records for IT assistance. However, as our part-time residents begin heading out, things are starting to slow down a bit. For the shortest wait times, we recommend stopping by our Thursday evening Open Lab (5 to 7 p.m.).

Not a member yet? Drop by an Open Lab located in the Creative Arts and Technology Center (CATC) to learn more about joining! Besides lab monitors with decades of IT support ready to assist you, your membership includes access to a variety of classes designed to help you become more confident and proficient with technology. Check out the full class list on our website www.quailcreekcomputerclub.org/upcoming-classes.

We hope to see you soon!
