Mark your calendars for Oct. 30 from 9 to 11 a.m. That’s when The Women of Quail Creek (TWOQC) will be sponsoring a canned goods drive for the homeless veterans served by the VA Hospital. In addition to non-perishable foods, the VA would also appreciate receiving paper and cleaning products.
Because the homeless veterans living on the streets or in a tent city do not have ready access to electricity, receiving canned goods in flip top cans is their No. 1 priority. Canned meats and fruit, granola bars, cheese and crackers are on their wish list, as are dried fruits.
However, the homeless veterans who have been moved into housing and are still undergoing counseling by the VA are issued can openers when they move, so regular cans are also appropriate. Some of these veterans have small children, so breakfast cereals and kid-friendly treats are always welcomed.
In addition to food items, consider donating paper products (toilet paper, paper towels, tissue, disposable plates, cups, and utensils, and trash bags) as well as cleaning and laundry products.
To give everyone a primarily contactless experience, there will be four drop-off locations scattered throughout Quail Creek: 1908 E. Longspur Place; 2306 E. Spurwind Lane; 2746 E. Eba Court; and 588 N. Hale Drive.
If you do not wish to shop but would still like to help, checks may be made payable to SAVACS VAVS Patient Programs and left at the drop-off locations.
All donations will be taken to the VA on Nov. 1 and will be distributed to the veterans prior to Veterans Day. Please consider supporting those who have served.
