Skip Jones and Alphie Smith
Tournament Director Skip Jones oversaw the monthly in-house tournament for the 11 members of the Quail Creek Billiards Club (QCBC) who signed up to play. It was held in the Billiards Room at the Madera clubhouse on Saturday, Dec. 6. The format was 8-ball.
The final matches were played on Sunday, Dec. 7. Dave Sypkens emerged as the winner. Terry Haggart placed second.
The tournament was double-elimination; best two out of three games on the winner’s side and sudden death on the one-loss side.
When play was suspended on Saturday, Haggart and Bob Coulter were the final one-loss side players and Sypkens was in the hot seat, waiting to play the winner of their match.
The first match on Sunday morning ended with Haggart defeating Coulter in a close game that could have gone either way. That set the stage for the tournament final.
Sypkens and Haggart played a great match, which went the entire three games, with Haggart winning. Since that was Sypkens’ first loss, a final game to decide the winner was now sudden death.
The game went down to three balls, and Sypkens made a great shot to set up an easy 8 ball and the win. Congratulations to Dave Sypkens.
The in-house tournaments for QCBC are held on the first Saturday of every month. For more information, go to our website at www.qcbilliards.com.
