The Quail Creek Quilt Covey devoted the month of July to creating a Quilt of Valor. The Quilts of Valor Foundation (QOVF) was begun in 2003 by Catherine Roberts when her son Nat was deployed in Iraq. The motto of the organization is “Quilting to Honor and Comfort.” The first Quilt of Valor was awarded in November 2003 to a young soldier from Minnesota who had lost his leg in Iraq. Since then the QOVF has awarded 143,480 quilts.

Led by Maryellen Mencimer, the ladies of the Covey used a pattern by quilt designer Kari Nichols. They began by cutting the pieces from the beautiful red, white and blue fabric. All fabrics were purchased from our local quilt shop, Quilters Desert Patch. The quilters then pieced the 20 individual blocks, making sure that each one was perfect, consistent with the QOV standards of excellence. It was quite challenging getting those points perfect! Once the quilt top was completed, Deb Migdalski did the long arm quilting and Marlene Walker created the presentation case for the quilt.

The Quilt of Valor will be presented by a representative from the QOVF to a veteran who has been nominated.

In addition to the women in the photo, the following also participated in the project: Elizabeth Heintz, Carol Lang, Judy Middleton, Deb Migdalski, Pam Schutt and Kris Wollard.
