Discover the beauty of ancient Casas Grandes style pottery. The artistic revival begun in Mata Ortiz, Chihuahua, Mexico, is coming to Quail Creek October 14, 15 and 16, 2016.

For the first time Lydia Quezada Celado de Talavera, youngest sister of renowned potter Juan Quezada of Mata Ortiz, son Moroni Talavera Quezada and daughter Pabla Talavera Quezada will be featured potters at Quail Creek’s Kino Conference Center.

Sponsored by Modern Mata Ortiz owner Victoria Martino and Quail Creek residents Vicki and Ron Sullivan, the show also features potters Hector Gallegos, Jr. and Laura Bugarini Cota, as well as Taxco sterling silver and Mata Ortiz pottery shard jewelry.

Lydia visited the United States in 1979 for the first time. Following a Mata Ortiz pottery exhibit at the Maxwell Museum in Albuquerque, Lydia, older brother Juan Quezada, and other members of the family met potter Maria Martinez and her family from San Ildefonso Pueblo. “I was 23 years old,” says Lydia. “During that period we traveled a lot promoting Mata Ortiz pottery. I felt lucky to meet her knowing how important Maria was as a potter.” It was also during that visit that the Quezadas visited Acoma Pueblo to meet world famous potter Lucy Lewis.

Lydia began teaching her daughter Pabla and son Moroni the art of making Mata Ortiz pottery when they were youngsters. This fabulous trio makes all styles, including white and polychrome. They now produce a new style of three tone black-on-black.

Rounding out the October event is jewelry made from contemporary Mata Ortiz pottery shards and 92.5% silver by Agustin Torres Beltran, a Nahuatl Indian in Taxco, Mexico. Each piece is one of a kind, totally hand formed.
