Construction of the current church at San Xavier del Bac

Come here docent Craig Reid describe the history of the church of San Xavier del Bac on Tuesday, January 14, 2020, 6:00 p.m. in the Madera Clubhouse Crystal Ballroom.

From 1783 to 1797, a group of artists and builders journeyed to the village of Wa:k and built the current church. By 1797 a building 5.5 stories tall in the baroque style had been built on the very northern edge of civilization. Artists traveled from the area of Mexico City to add statues and paintings to the walls. The original art is still on display. The presentation will also trace the history of restoration of this building and look at some the unique art found inside. Subjected to the harsh environment of the Sonoran Desert the church has seen heroic efforts to keep it in its original appearance. Now a World Heritage “watch list” site, much effort takes place even today to preserve this fine example of baroque building and art to the desert southwest. Docent Craig Reid will narrate the story of the church of San Xavier del Bac.
