Don Beaver, Fitness Director
It’s that time again when the ranks of our QC residents swell with the gorgeous Southern Arizona weather and, naturally, the activity at the Anza Athletic Center also increases along with the QC population. With that being said, let’s refamiliarize ourselves with how to maximize your enjoyment of our splendid Anza facilities and services:
Aquatics: Open 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day, featuring a five-lane lap pool, spa, and recreation pool. Lane reservations for our 83-degree lap pool are made online and up to two weeks in advance. Timely cancellations are strongly encouraged, allowing fellow residents exercise opportunities. The refreshing 87-degree rec pool hosts: 1) complimentary water aerobics classes Monday through Saturday at 8 a.m. and 9 a.m., and 2) toilet-trained to 17-year-old youngsters from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 4 to 6 p.m. daily. Of course, our 103-degree spa is an outstanding way to relax those aching muscles after a workout, golf game, tennis match, and/or pickleball contest. Remember, please dry off prior to re-entering the Anza, cover-ups must be worn in the Anza, food is prohibited, and nonalcoholic beverages must be in enclosed, nonglass containers.
Tennis and Pickleball: It is highly recommended to pursue membership in the QC Tennis Club and/or the QC Pickleball Club. These clubs offer a variety of competitive and social events, as well as a broader opportunity to reserve courts. Go to www.qcpickleball.org and/or www.quailcreektennis.com accordingly for membership information. Note: Construction of 16 additional pickleball courts is underway, and tennis courts 3-5 were resurfaced earlier this year.
Bocce: This popular activity is available daily until 10 p.m. and is located between the Anza and the tennis courts. Our newly resurfaced bocce courts can be reserved via a calendar that is posted on the bulletin board immediately adjacent to the courts, and bocce balls are stored in the locker that is situated between courts 2 and 3.
Gymnasium: Also open 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily and features top-of-the-line fitness equipment from LifeFitness that focuses on specific muscle groups, as well as four adjustable cable pieces and dumbbells. Cardiovascular equipment includes treadmills, ellipticals, striders, upright and recumbent bikes, rowers, and recuperative pieces by SciFit. Note: Please be keenly aware of the 30-minute time limit on cardio pieces with the increased gym attendance. If you prefer privacy and/or space for stretching/core work, the Rincon Room is the perfect setting for you. Personal training is available and provided for a fee by our highly certified instructors Dr. Laura and Steven McMurtry.
Group Fitness Classes: The frequency and variety of our low-cost fitness classes expand during this “season”—fall through spring. Our classes can address certain physical needs: SilverSneakers, Senior Balance, and Strong and Fit, to name a few, or they can offer a more challenging level such as HIIT-Fit, Zumba, Mat Pilates (returning class), and Body Blast. If you prefer improving balance, core strength, and more, check out Karate, Gentle Yoga, Yoga for Men, Hatha Yoga (new class), the more challenging Vinyasa Yoga, Sports Conditioning, Classic Fitness, and Total Body Workout classes. Note: Classes are limited due to local building codes and, as a result, it is highly recommended that you register +/- 20 minutes early to reserve your spot. Anza group instructors are both fully insured and highly certified in their specific areas of fitness, too!
Parking: Parking will be at a premium with more of us in residency. Please park your carts in cart spaces or up on the rise near the Grill. Also, our three marked handicap spaces are for cars, vans, etc., not golf carts.
In closing, let’s all welcome back our snowbird friends and maximize our enjoyment of Quail Creek facilities and services as we also enjoy the journey!
