The Women of Quail Creek will use a travel theme for their summer luncheon scheduled for June 27 in the Madera Clubhouse ballroom. Experiencing a Russian adventure, the luncheon will include food reflective of Russia. The women will also be entertained by four members of the Arizona Balalaika Orchestra under the direction of Mia Bulgarian Gay.
Begun in 1980 as a small ensemble within the University of Arizona Russian Department, the orchestra plays authentic Slavic instruments and dresses in traditional, brightly colored Russian costumes. They have toured throughout Arizona and Mexico and have twice hosted the annual conventions of the Balalaika and Domra Association of America (BDAA). TWOQC will be treated to a spirited performance by a small ensemble from the orchestra and will also learn the rich history of Balalaika music. Tickets are $20 per person and are available to all members of TWOQC and first-time female guests. To purchase tickets contact Nancy Wilson, treasurer, at [email protected]. Checks may be written to TWOQC.
Also at the luncheon, TWOQC will be conducting its annual Food for the Troops collection for the Tucson Air National Guard. Donations of non-perishable foods as well as cleaning and paper supplies and hygiene items are needed. Popular food items include cereal, granola bars, mac ‘n cheese, soups, stews, ravioli and peanut butter.
