September Photo Contest

The Photography Club of Quail Creek recently announced the winners of the September photo contest, which focused on Motion.

Shari Rogers won first place with I Believe I Can Fly, a photo of a dog doing Fast CAT, which stands for Coursing Ability Test (running 100 yards while chasing a lure). She said she has “been fortunate to be able to photograph dogs doing Fast CAT runs and, also, my dog participates. My goal is always to capture all four legs in the air … and I was able to do it with this shot! It was nice, as this was a good friend’s dog, and now she has a photo to enjoy as well!” The image was captured with a Nikon D500, 270 mm, f/6.3, 1/1600 sec, ISO 100, no flash.

Jeff Krueger won second place with Folds of Honor, a Pitts biplane flown by Ed “Hamster” Hamill, taken on the last day of the Marine Corps Air Station-Miramar Air Show on Sept. 29. Jeff said, “I was shooting a Canon R5 MkII mirrorless camera with a 100-500mm Canon RF lens at 500mm, ISO 100, 1/500 sec at f/7. This was a fairly fast shutter speed for a propeller aircraft, but the RPM of the motor allowed for prop movement to be seen. Folds of Honor is a charitable organization that provides scholarships to military and first responder families.”

Tom Cadwalader won third place with Motion 1, a photo of a pelican “made while on a hike in the Ponce Inlet area of Florida.” The equipment was an Olympus OM 1, f/4.5 150-400 zoom set at f/8.0, 1/1250 sec, ISO 200.

The Photography Club of Quail Creek has a monthly photo contest in which members may submit up to three photos taken within the last 13 months and with minimal post-processing. A panel of judges from across the country selects the winners. The club also has a quarterly challenge in which members may submit up to three photos taken within the quarter. Extensive post-processing is allowed, and winners are selected by club member voting.

The club meets on the second Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m., usually at the Kino Conference Center Mesquite Room. The club also schedules episodic photo field trips and educational meetings. Consult the club’s website www.pcqc.org as well as the weekday HOA What’s Happening for additional information. Membership is open to all Quail Creek residents.
