Rattlesnake Safety Alert

Rattlesnakes are active at night and often blend into their surroundings. Protect yourself by staying alert and following these safety guidelines:

Use a Flashlight

Always carry a flashlight when outdoors after dark. Shine it on your path to spot snakes that may be on the ground or hidden near buildings, equipment, or landscaping.

Wear Protective Footwear

Never walk barefoot at night. Wear closed-toe shoes or boots. Most snakebites occur on the feet and ankles.

Look Before You Step or Reach

Avoid placing your hands or feet in areas you cannot see, such as behind planters, under patio furniture, or near pool equipment. Always check before retrieving toys, pool noodles, or other items left outside.

Check Shaded and Cool Spots

Be especially cautious in shaded areas near buildings, covered entryways, or other cool hiding spots that snakes may use in warmer weather.

If you encounter a rattlesnake:

• Stay calm and do not panic.

• Freeze, then back away slowly, giving the snake at least five feet of space.

• Do not attempt to kill, capture, or handle it. Many bites occur this way. Even a dead snake can still bite.

• Warn others and keep pets away. Report snake sightings to staff at the reception desk at the facility.

• For snake removal, call SRFD Fire Corps at 520-629-9200.

Stay alert, stay safe, and protect yourself at night.
