Yacht Club members gathered at Quail Creek residents Al and Joanna Miller’s home on Friday evening, March 7 for their regular potluck meeting and viewing of Robert Redford’s new movie All Is Lost, a gripping story of a lone sailor whose sailboat strikes a stray container from a ship transiting the shipping lanes 1,700 miles offshore in the Indian Ocean. Members, many of them sailors, or former boat owners, found much to discuss about boating safety and survival preparedness as they watched the harrowing survival story unfold.

Host Al Miller also shared his photographs of his involvement in the restoration of the HMS Bounty replica. In the winter of 2008, he led a group of woodworkers that restored the helm assembly. Unfortunately, in an untimely end, the Bounty was lost at sea in Superstorm Sandy with the loss of two crewmembers, including the Captain, both of whom were longtime friends of Al.

Sadness of shipwrecks aside, members enjoyed a wonderful evening of good food and fellowship. The next meeting is scheduled to be held at the home of Rich Coker and Brenda Blanton on May 2.
