Quail Creek Fights Back—Relay For Life Team Needs Walkers and Cancer Survivors for March 29 Relay Event

Left to right: Charlene Nilson, Joella Austin, Tom O’Dierno, Ginny Hutcheson, and Rose Welliver, all members of the Quail Creek Fights Back Relay For Life team.

From 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on March 29 at Rancho Resort, 15900 S. Rancho Resort Blvd., teams will walk to honor and in memory of cancer survivors. Many in Quail Creek are active walkers, and we invite everyone to take their walk in a lovely park in Rancho Resort at the corner of Sahuarita Road and La Canada Drive. Some in Quail Creek have been affected by cancer. Come walk a few laps in someone’s memory or in honor of someone who is on their cancer journey.

At 11 a.m. the Opening Ceremonies start with a survivor speech, the Mayor of Sahuarita welcoming everyone, and then the survivor/caregiver lap, followed by the team laps. A survivor/caregiver social is offered at about noon. Teams have someone walking on the track all day, representing that cancer doesn’t stop to rest. We celebrate with the decorated bra lap, the decorated boxer lap, the umbrella lap, more laps that represent different cancers, and music and games.

Teams will be selling hamburgers, walking tacos, Eegee’s drinks, soup, and more. Raffle prizes, 50/50 opportunities, and Jim Click raffle tickets will be available for fun opportunities to help the teams raise $40,000 for the American Cancer Society for cancer research.

At 7 p.m. teams will light luminaria bags with names written on them that represent someone touched by cancer. Walking the lighted track listening to names read out loud is a touching ceremony. Just before the lights go out, teams empty the canned goods holding down the luminaria bags, and the Sahuarita Food Bank comes to pick up the cans. The whole day is a joyous and memorable event to support those who need our help.

We would like to have the support of our friends in Quail Creek. The team goal is to raise $15,000 for the American Cancer Society. There is no registration fee, but donations are accepted. Please sign up to walk as a survivor at 11 a.m. by registering for our team, or join our team to walk by clicking on the Quail Creek team at www.relayforlife.org/gvsahuaritaaz. Have a sign made in honor or in memory of someone for $100 or a luminaria bag with someone’s name on it for $5. Contact Team Captain Ginny Hutcheson at [email protected] for more information.
