“This is my very own book,” explained a four-year-old boy, showing me pages of beetles, spiders, and other crawly things. He chose this book from more than 100 books donated by the Quail Creek Book Club. Each year members bring new books to the holiday party, which are then distributed to the Sahuarita Food Bank and Community Resource Center.

All of the members love reading, of course, and they routinely gift their grandchildren, nieces, and nephews books. Many have been reading teachers or librarians and want their own love of reading and learning to go beyond their own families and into their community.

The Sahuarita Food Bank and Community Resource Center, in addition to distributing food to needy families, offers programs to benefit the entire community. There are Fun Family Fitness Programs, Postpartum Support Groups, cooking classes, and a Welding Certification Program. Toddlers get together for story time and group play, and seniors in need of assistance can get help preparing their taxes. The facility is located at 17750 S. La Canada Lane, Sahuarita, and offers many volunteer opportunities for Quail Creek residents. The Food Bank’s phone number is 520-771-2372.

The Quail Creek Book Club meets from 7 to 8 p.m. on the first Monday of each month (unless it is a holiday) in the Gold Room of the clubhouse. Members vote on the books they choose to read for the upcoming year. Laura Reilly, as the Book Club’s facilitator, tallies the votes and distributes the reading list and schedule at the holiday party.
