Photography Club First Quarter Challenge

Paul Lischeid won the Photography Club’s first quarter challenge with On the Hunt, a photo of a white egret taken at Canoa Ranch. Paul said he made several trips to get the shot, looking for a neutral background, calm wind for smooth water, and the egret feeding on the opposite bank. He said he had a long wait, but it paid off. Canon EOS 5D Mark III, 500 mm, f/10, 1/100 sec, ISO 200.

Lon Richardson won second place with Stoic Sentinels. Lon said he “had been struck by the prominence of this seasoned fencepost and barbed wire, serving as a last bastion to the nature preserve against our residential progress push into the desert” while on previous walks. He said, “On this particular day, filtered light produced fine glowing highlights off the barbed wire, cholla, and post grain. Mountains and saguaro grounded and balanced the image, and the picture framed itself nicely for me.” Samsung S906U, 5.4 mm, f/1.8, 1/235 sec, ISO 20.

Tom Cadwalader won third place with Cowboy and Dog, an image he made during a photography workshop titled The Magic of Cowboys in Gold Canyon, Ariz., last February. The workshop provided several cowboys and cowgirls as subjects who posed in ranch life settings. Tom said this shot of Rycke Scheifer, a champion team roper, was taken with strong sunlight “reflecting off of buildings on the opposite side of the driveway, which put the subjects in nice, soft sunlight and the background, being perpendicular to the other buildings, in a soft shadow.” Tom said he particularly liked the pose of the dog. Leica SL 3, 63 mm, f/5.6, 1/100 sec, ISO 250. The raw image was processed in Adobe Camera Raw.

The Photography Club meets at 6:30 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month in the Mesquite Room. Membership is open to all Quail Creek residents.
