On The Go: Dark Sky

Carol Michels

On Oct. 27, 30 ladies gathered to listen to John Grahame in the Crystal Ballroom in the Madera clubhouse. John Grahame is a Green Valley-based Dark Sky advocate. He shared information on the impacts of excessive outdoor lighting on wildlife, as well as our own safety and security. He offered many ideas for safe, natural outdoor lights.

John passed out a worksheet covering five principles for responsible outdoor lighting, including useful, targeted, low level, controlled, and warm colored.

During the question and answer period, the ladies had the opportunity to ask personal questions related to their own lighting issues.

John said he’s retired but remains devoted and passionate about returning communities to natural lighting alternatives. He never charges for his service and has nothing to sell. Karen Conroy from the On The Go TWOQC (The Women Of Quail Creek) was the leader of this very timely and informative event.
