Nurses Discover Our Local History

Janine Baxter

The February event of the Nurses of Quail Creek was both enjoyable and educational, featuring a presentation by the Santa Cruz Valley Historical Society (SCVHS). Three knowledgeable members of SCVHS, including Mary Chernoski, a longtime Quail Creek resident, provided insights into how our area transitioned from a quiet agricultural, ranching, and mining community into a vibrant suburban hub. The evening was filled with stories and photographs dating from the late 1800s to the present. The nurses were active participants, asking plenty of questions, which led to an interactive and engaging experience. After the presentation, attendees enjoyed drinks and dessert at the Grill at Quail Creek.

Looking ahead, our March meeting will take place on Tuesday, March 18, at 3 p.m. at the home of Peggy Myers, 2451 E. Copper Valley Way. Lenny Friedman, an Arizona Pickleball Education Ambassador and QC resident, will discuss Pickleball for Parkinson’s (a Quail Creek program). Light snacks will be provided.

April will bring two events for the nurses. On Wednesday, April 2, we will visit the Master Gardeners at the University of Arizona’s Pima County Cooperative Extension Office, 530 E. Whitehouse Canyon Road, Green Valley. QC resident Jeff McCune will lead a tour and share gardening tips for our desert climate. The tour will run from 9:30 to 11 a.m., followed by lunch at a local restaurant (location details to be determined).

On Tuesday, April 15, a yurt at Madera Canyon will be the site for a Gentle/Beginner Stretch class led by instructor Jennifer Rischaard. The cost will be $8 to $10, depending on the number of participants. It will begin at 9 a.m., with brunch to follow at Posada Java Coffee House.

As always, we want to make sure to invite all nurses in the Quail Creek community to join us. We are always welcoming new members. There are no membership fees. We typically meet once per month, and nurses can participate in any and all activities that are of interest to them.
