One elementary school and the two high schools in Sahuarita have programs on tap to honor our nation’s veterans in Veterans Day celebrations. Because the schools are closed on Nov. 11, their celebrations will take place a few days earlier.
Basketball teams as well as staff and faculty from Sahuarita and Walden Grove High Schools will gather for the fifth annual Power Pack Attack basketball game to be held at the Sahuarita High School gym on Nov. 7 starting at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $3 for active and retired military as well as seniors over 65, $5 for those under 65, and $20 for families. Entertainment includes the Wrightson Ridge School Choir, bands from the Walden Grove and Sahuarita high schools, the Sahuarita Jockeys, and the Walden Grove Pac Dance Teams. The half-time entertainment will feature a tribute to all veterans and active duty personnel. Funds raised during this event will help the Sahuarita Educational Enrichment Foundation (SEEF) continue to offer teacher mini-grants, teacher assistance toward National Board Certification, and summer enrichment activities for students. Tickets may be purchased at the door. There will also be food trucks starting at 5 p.m.
The free Continental School’s ceremony will take place at 8:15 a.m. on Nov. 8 at the school’s flagpole located just behind the district office at 1991 E. White House Canyon Rd. The elementary school children will sing patriotic songs like we learned in grade school with great enthusiasm.
At press time, there was no definite word on a ceremony on Nov. 11 at the Green Valley Cemetery. Watch the local papers as the date gets closer. It is always a very moving ceremony.
