Members of Let’s Travel Club carpooled on Jan. 26 to enjoy a winter day at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum. After a chilly start, temperatures rebounded nicely, making for a very pleasant day.
The Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum spans 21 acres, and 85% of the museum is outdoors. Upon our arrival, we participated in two very informative docent-led talks as we walked along two miles of walking paths. We learned about the many birds at the museum and also went on a nature walk. The Raptor Free Flight was no doubt the highlight of our visit! We had an excellent narration about native birds of prey that fly so close you can almost feel the brush of their feathers!
For lunch, members could choose between Ocotillo Café (sit-down service) or a more casual, food court-style dining experience at Ironwood Terraces. Afterwards, it was a short walk to the very comfortable indoor Warden Oasis Theatre for an informal live animal presentation (rattlesnakes and a young Gila monster). Before departing the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, there was plenty of free time to explore the Ironwood Art Gallery and the Hummingbird Aviary or to shop at the three gift shops on site.
