May 1 was an eventful day for 18 young ladies and 18 young men from the fifth through eighth grades at Continental Middle School. These students joined 36 of Quail Creek’s Lady Niners for the highlight of the middle school’s golf program.
The game for the nine hole round was a four person scramble with two students and two Lady Niners teaming up. The game gave everyone a chance to test their golf skills. At the awards luncheon following golf, the following were honored: (*denotes students)
First Place winners: Alyce Mancini, *Garrett Esry, Gloria Contreras, *Mia Mesa
Second Place winners: Jan Ederle, *Colleen Kratzer, Kathleen McLaughlin, *Andrew Montoya
Third Place winners: Jackie Hallett, *Collette Kratzer, Carol Galloway, *Tylor Juhlin
Fourth Place winners: Darlene Vanderway, *Hannah Bichekas, Jean Sponcel, *Zach Rojahn
Quail Creek’s Pro Joel Jaress and Lady Niner President Marci Yenerich presented each winning student with a trophy. All students received golf hats and a sleeve of balls.
The success of this tournament is a tribute to Christi Tucker, Lady Niner, who initiated the event, and has chaired it for five consecutive years. Christi coordinated the tournament with Steven Lathan, student coach at Continental, who sets high goals for his students’ participation in this event. Students earn the right to be invited to the tourney by exhibiting good behavior, grades, attendance and effort.
Lady Niners who teamed up with a student were very impressed with their young teammates! And the students? They left with hopes of a return trip to Quail Creek next year! And maybe even a trophy.
