The Educational TRIPS Committee has reserved group tour space at Kartchner Caverns State Park for Thursday, December 3. Reservations will be taken at the Concierge Desk beginning in mid-November, and details will be announced in What’s Happening. Cost will be $26 per person. Lunch afterwards in the café is optional.
The cave was discovered in 1974 when two teenagers “found a narrow crack in the bottom of a sinkhole and followed the source of warm, moist air toward what ended up being more than 2.5 miles of pristine cave passages,” Wikipedia reports.
The cave has many strange and colorful limestone formations in the Rotunda/Throne Room, where Kubla Khan, the largest column formation in Arizona, can be seen. Temperatures are approximately 80 degrees in the cave, and the paved walkway has a gradual incline. The underground tour lasts approximately 1 1/2 hours.
There is a Discovery Center and an educational video plays in the theater. Plan to join other community members in this fascinating underground landscape tour.
