July’s photography contest theme was “Let’s Have a Celebration,” appropriately tied to the Fourth of July. Two of the three winners were shot locally at Quail Creek and the third somewhere off the Alaskan coast line. Ken Haley won First Place with a picture taken during last month’s Quail Creek Fourth of July Parade which honored Vietnam War era veterans. The men in this picture, Wes Whitman and John Kozma, constructed a form around a golf cart to make it look like an Army vehicle and took Uncle Sam for a ride. Their entry won both first place in the decorated golf cart contest and the Grand Marshall’s prize. The picture was taken as the parade left the Madera Clubhouse for a figure eight loop around Quail Creek. The picture was taken with a Canon EOD 5D Mark III with EF24-70 mm f/2.8L USM lens. 43 mm focal length (57.3 mm equivalent). ISO 100, 1/200 sec, f/10.
Bob Aagaard’s Second Place photo was taken during the 2012 parade honoring the Korean War veterans. Bob was riding on the Gun Club float and shot the picture as the parade went down Quail Range Loop. Nikon D60 with AF-S DX with AF-DX VR Zoom Nikkor 55-200 mm f.4-5.6 GIF-ED lens. 72 mm focal length (108 mm equivalent). ISO 400, 1/800 sc, f/7.1.
Peter Murphy’s Third Place photo was taken this past July on an Alaskan cruise to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with his wife Carmen. The ship was elaborately decorated throughout for the Fourth. This particular display was one of many gracing the entrance of one of the dining rooms. Peter kept it simple with a Nikon Coolpix P500. 4 mm focal length (22 mm equivalent). ISO 3200, 1/160 sec, f 3.4.
