Monte Hudson won first place in the Photography Club’s January contest with Steam Engine Engineer, taken at the Southern Arizona Transportation Museum in Tucson. Monte said the engineer, one of the docents, “is sitting in a steam engine that had its 15 minutes of fame by appearing in the musical Oklahoma.” Monte captured the image with her cell phone and used the phone to convert it to black and white, crop, and sharpen.

Shari Rodgers won second place with Big Gal, one of the steam engines in Durango, Colo. Shari said, “Durango is always a fun trip and a must-stop there … the railroad. Several train crossing areas and this big engine looked like it would be a good shot.” Olympus TG6, 18mm, f/4.9, 1/125 sec., ISO 100.

Larry Hudson won third place with Steam Engine Controls, also taken at the Southern Arizona Transportation Museum, showing the controls of the steam engine on display at the museum. iPhone 17 pro, 2.2mm, f/2.2, 1/125 sec, ISO 100.
