Honor and Recognize Our Veterans with HSFA

Diane Gordon

The Honor Flight Southern Arizona (HSFA) sponsors Honor Flights to Washington, D.C. These flights honor and recognize the sacrifice made by our veterans of wars, including WWII, Korean, and Vietnam wars. These veterans are selected by HSFA to participate in one of its sponsored flights to Washington, D.C. to see the war memorials.

Honor Flight Southern Arizona sponsored its first flight for 31 veterans on Sept. 21, 2011. A total of 29 flights have been completed to date, honoring 858 veterans. This spring, HSFA will sponsor approximately 50 war veterans on two Honor Flights, Flight 30 on May 9-11 and Flight 31 on June 6-8.

The Women of Quail Creek (TWOQC) members write letters to the war veterans thanking them for their service. TWOQC encourages their members, spouses/significant others, other family members, friends, and neighbors to join this opportunity to show their appreciation and thanks by joining in the letter-writing effort. Also, TWOQC members attend the departure to and the return from Washington D.C. at the Tucson International Airport.

The writers should address their letters or notecards to “Dear Veteran” or “Dear Hero”, sign the letter, and if appropriate, include The Women of Quail Creek within the signature. The writers can embellish the letters with American Flags or other appropriate stickers. The writers should also make 50 copies of the letter and put them in an envelope. The envelope of letters should then be dropped off at Carin Kaiser’s home, 2719 E. Sawyer Rd., Green Valley. The due dates for the letters for Flight 30 is April 26, and for Flight 31, May 24.

For those interested in attending the send-off and/or welcome back at the Tucson Airport, the information will appear in What’s Happening.
