Deck the Halls with Fire Safety

The holidays bring joy but also increased fire risks from kitchen mishaps, dry trees, candles, and faulty wiring. Follow these tips from the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA):

Candles

• Keep candles 12 inches from anything flammable and in sturdy holders.

• Consider flameless, battery-operated candles.

• Christmas Day is the peak for candle fires.

Holiday Lights

• Inspect lights yearly; discard damaged strands.

• Turn off lights when leaving or sleeping.

• Follow manufacturer limits on connected strands.

Christmas Trees

• Cut the trunk at 45 degrees and keep it in water; water daily.

• Keep the tree 3 feet from heat sources and clear exits.

• Dispose of dry trees promptly.

• Cut 2 inches off the trunk before placing it in the stand for better water absorption.

Decorations

• Use outdoor-rated lights outside; secure them well.

• Avoid electric lights on metallic trees.

• Place breakable ornaments high; keep tinsel and ribbons away from kids/pets.

• Consider securing tree with fishing line to prevent tipping.

Fireplace Safety

• Keep flammable items 3 feet away.

• Use a fire screen; extinguish the fire before bed or leaving.

• Test smoke/CO detectors; keep a fire extinguisher nearby.

• Burn dry wood; have the chimney inspected annually.
