December 2023 PCQC Photo Contest: Open

The photo Lucky Strike, by Steve Piepmeier, placed third.

Denny Huber took second place with his photo Horse in a Window.

Tom Cadwalader won first place with his photo Family Affair.

The Photo Club of Quail Creek (PCQC) continued with its monthly members’ contest, with December having the topic of “Open.” Each club member could enter up to three photos taken in the last year. This subject was a good one for the members and drew 30 entries. All the photos can be seen on our Flickr site tinyurl.com/mr32k5hv.

Tom Cadwalader won first place with his photo Family Affair. Tom commented, “The two Harris’s Hawks in the image are siblings and are part of the Free Flight program at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum. The day the image was made, the pair were part of worship for photographers that is done a week or so before the Free Flight program resumes for the fall through spring season. The Harris’s Hawk is notable for its behavior of hunting cooperatively, and for the workshop, they released both of these raptures together. The skies were constantly changing that October morning, making for a more interesting background for images and giving the images a bit more mood. The RAW image was processed in Adobe Lightroom Classic.”

Tom took this shot with his OM-1, shooting at 200mm, 1/2500 sec at f/9.0, and processed in Lightroom Classic.

Denny Huber took second place with his photo Horse in a Window. Denny commented, “We were in Illinois, and my horse-crazy daughter took us to a polo match. I got some decent shots of the action but was wandering around the barns and saw this perfectly positioned horse looking out his window, and he was perfectly framed by all the green ivy. I took about 10 shots, and this was the best.” Denny used his iPhone 13, and processed in Lightroom Classic

The photo Lucky Strike, by Steve Piepmeier, placed third. Steve said, “Third place Lucky Strike was just that! Pushing the button on a beautiful monsoon sunset, and when I saw the back of the camera, I realized in that split second that I had captured that elusive lightning strike. You have to be vigilant, and that Panasonic shot is always in its holster on my hip!” Steve used his Panasonic ZS200, shooting at 24 mm focal length, at 1/80 sec at f/3.3.

The Photography Club of Quail Creek has a monthly photo contest for its members and schedules numerous photo field trips for members throughout the year. Meetings are held the second Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m. at the Kino Conference Center, Ocotillo Room. Room venue could vary each month.
