On Saturday, Jan. 15, the Quail Creek Computer Club held its annual open house. However, this was the first one since 2019, as COVID forced the cancellations of the 2020 and 2021 events.
Invitations had been extended to the entire Quail Creek community for 2021 members to register for 2022, for nonmembers to come and learn about the club and to sign up for 2022, and for all 2021 and 2022 members to take part in a drawing for door prizes. The Computer Club was building on a very successful 2021 when we finished the year with 566 members, up from 498 in 2021.
The event, despite the COVID precautions, was busy and exciting, with over 75 people attending. We had door prize tickets submitted from 37 households (one ticket per household) for nine door prizes. During the open house, we had 37 households pay their dues for 2022 and 23 new members signed up. The club continues to grow as new people move into Quail Creek and join. Our board of directors, who were on duty for the entire event, answered a variety of questions ranging from the content and timing of our many courses to how open labs and help sessions work.
New board of directors member Joyce Shumate enjoyed the task of phoning the winners and delivering the prizes. This year, we switched to Amazon gift cards as prizes: one for $200 and eight for $100 each. The winners were: $200 gift card to Janice McCoy; and $100 gift cards to Roger Oravetz, Susan Schulmeister, Carole Hendershott, Cindy Day, Denny Huber, Jerry DeVinck, Dale Suckstorff, and Bob Walker.
The next general meetings of the Computer Club, open to all, will be Feb. 15 and March 15 at 7 p.m. in the Madera Ballroom. The speakers and programs will be announced in What’s Happening.
